The fashion Omega x swatch watches
Although you may see a few Swatch Group Mission cases on display in Omega Boutiques, these watches will not be sold there. We are told physical Swatch Boutiques will be instructed to only sell two of these watches per customer. Following the furor over the Omegas Moonwatch Speedmaster collaboration, Swatch released a statement saying the 11 different watches would be limited to one each until further notice. Swatch said Swatch would be producing additional pieces of the cult classic Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch collaboration in the future and the crowds would likely keep flocking to the 11 different watches being unveiled.
Omega and Swatch have teamed up for the release of the version of the original Speedmaster, known as Moonwatch, one of the most collected, discussed, and desired watches models. Or, as the latest buzz watch is seldom called (but the dial says it, so I am going to say it, too) an Omega Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch.
To go along with the weirdness of a watch saying both Omega and Swatch on it, the proper review should start at the first hurdle in buying the MoonSwatch. Dubbed a moon watch, this timepiece uses the same dial of high-end Swiss timepiece-maker OMEGAs Speedmaster chronograph, but rather than having a metal case, it has a bioceramic case, and its movement is quartz, not the mechanical, NASA-certified, Moonwatch-worthy one.
After teasing it via social media for a week and taking out full-page ads in newspapers, the high-end Swiss timepiece maker OMEGA and the watch giant Swatch announced the collaboration, using Omegas’ acclaimed Moonwatch.
When an unusual partnership was announced between Swatch and luxury siblings Omega, it sent shockwaves throughout the world of watches, and perhaps even beyond. With the retail price at a mere $260, Omega x Swatch gave both watch lovers and newcomers a chance to get Omega’s storied Speedmaster chronograph on their wrists at a fraction of its normal $6350 price.
Made from a hybrid material of plastic and ceramic called Bioceramic, the affordable MoonSwatch watches sport Omegas name across the dial, and borrow a lot of the iconic style from the adored Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch – the one that was famously worn to the Moon, costing thousands of dollars – for just $260.
This might have been better, because, at the last minute, Swatch cut its last-minute, hyped watches-per-customer subsidy in half, down to a single unit. Swatch failed on the moon to watch the successful launch, and I say this because I reject the theory that this kind of supply shortfall was planned and executed in order to reinforce hype for their brands Swatch and Omega.
The dials, though, are all stamped with Omega x Swatch and Speedmaster logos, along with a new moon watch name. For example, the Omega X Swatch line piece “Mission to Saturn” has the rings of Saturn surrounding a subdial in a 6-of-the-clock location, while the MoonSwatch “Mission to Mars” has a red rocket-hand of an Omega Speedmaster “Alaska Project” on its subdial.
Swatch has collaborated with Omega on a vision of a groundbreaking Swatch version of the Speedmaster Moonwatch. Omega and Swatch collaborated to create the former Speedmaster, also known as the Moonwatch, one of the most collected, debated, and desired watches models. This Omega/Swatch collaboration – Omega x Swatch Speedmaster MoonSwatch – takes watch collaborations to a new level.
We should be realistic about expectations, as the quality and specifications are not going to match more expensive watches, particularly Omegas original Speedmaster. Here, we wanted to take it one step further, because we had a brand as iconic as Omega, which has one product that is a symbol of the Swiss watch industry, the Speedmaster. You can argue this quartz movement is not an homage to Omega…it is an Omega…that just so happens to be made by Swatch, which is an Omegas sister brand.
In addition, to watch functions, the dial includes branding for Omega and Swatch (at twelve hours), this quartz movement (at three hours), and an automatic Speedmaster (at nine hours). For example, the Omega X Swatch line Mission to Saturn pieces feature the rings of Saturn surrounding a subdial in its sixth-hour position, while the Mission to Mars MoonSwatch features a red rocket hand of the Omega Speedmaster Alaska Project on its subdial.
