Rolex Submariner Family ties and History

 

Rolex Submariner is a range of sports watches created by Rolex, designed to meet the needs of professional and recreational divers alike. First released in 1953, the Submariner is the most popular dive watch from Rolex, for good reason. Debuting in 1954 at the Basel Watch Fair, the Rolex Submariner immediately gained attention and accolades due to its black dial, rotating time-telling bezel, and exceptional waterproofing, making it one of the earliest and most advanced dive watches.

In 1953, with recreational diving taking hold of the public consciousness after World War II, Rolex launched the Submariner, one of the first purpose-built dive watches in the world. Rolex experts worked over the years to perfect one of the features that allowed underwater immersion, and the original Submariner debuted at the 1954 Swiss watch fair.

The Rolex Submariner is known for its waterproofness and was the first ever designed to go underwater. Submerged up to 980 feet or 300 meters, one is well above early waterproof models, with maximum continuous waterproofing going only up to 200 meters or 660 feet.Oyster Perpetual Submariner

The iconic Rolex Submariner, launched in 1953 and famously used in James Bond films, was the first dive watch that was water resistant up to 100 meters (330 feet). Known fondly throughout the watch world as a Sub, Rolex Submariner established standards of what we could expect in a luxury dive watch: rotating bezel, high volume, instant readability, and waterproofing.

Once you move past the fact that Reference 114060 is a genuine Rolex Submariner, rather than one of the countless tributes or replicas that one encounters daily, it is obvious why this watch has become such a benchmark. In production from 2012 through 2020, previous generations were eerily similar to Rolex, so we strapped one of these onto our wrists to see if the watch was worth its iconic status.
