Does putting on fancy or luxury watches really mean you are Rich?: Let’s find out what we need to know about what watch speaks of us when we wear one
Watch enthusiasts appreciate different things, so there are many different brands and models of luxury watches out there. From Rolex watches to recent designs by luxury watch juggernaut Richard Mille, there are luxury watch brands constantly proving their worth, again and again, just by being accessible for those looking to gift, buy, own, or wear.
Princess Diana, Kim Kardashian, Tom Ford, and Angelina Jolie are a few of those that have been seen wearing Cartier and Richard Mille luxury watches. These luxury brands are known to create extremely complex and timeless designs on watches. Cartier has long been a benchmark of timeless luxury, having been making wristwatches since the beginning of the 20th century (its first creation was the Santos — considered for some time to be an instant watch design classic). The Cartier wearer stands out from watch lovers because they do not care about horology, to them, their watches are simply one among a number of luxurious fashion items.
This does not necessarily mean that they are wearing a budget watch. Not every wealthy person wears exactly the same type of watch, but all are expensive. Success is not always defined by wealth, but if you are wearing a high-end watch, you should have the cash to afford one. The biggest reason someone wants to wear an expensive watch is to show they can afford to. Wearing a luxury watch is not necessary to get others thinking about you in any different way. If you own an everyday san blinged, diamond-studded watch, one that is resistant to wear and tear and waterproof, you are telling people around you that you are an everyday guy.
While these reasons are basic, they are common, and they probably, in my opinion, are a big part of the reason people love wearing fancy watches. I want to examine a few common psychological factors playing out in the minds of the people who enjoy wearing luxury wristwatches. The Wall Street Journal has touched on the types of people who tend to wear high-end watches (think Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Omega, etc.
A Rolex says a person is not going to give in to trends, and will instead put their money where their mouth is and buy something that will last them for a very long time. For someone wearing a Patek Philippe to be wearing a Patek Philippe, shows he values the time, energy, and hard work that went into making this watch. When I sell a $50 one when I am done with it, I make 10% of a profit ($5k), and anyone that is a fan of luxury watches, or at least one who is rich, is going to compliment me for wearing Rolex.
