The history of Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso began in the 1930s when a group of British Army officers assigned in India enjoyed playing polo in their downtime. The polo game is somehow brutal and aggressive, from powerful mallets to hard polo balls, so any player who left their watch on during a match found it destroyed. This made them approach a local watch dealer by the name of Cesar De Trey to design a watch that could hold up to the sport. De Trey, therefore enlisted the help of Jacques-David LeCoultre and the firm Jaeger S.A. to accomplish the request.
First, they explored a more formal approach, like a protective grill which was used on military-issued watches during WWI as a layer of safety in intense conditions. Then they applied a new strategy and invented a design for a reversible case. On the 4th of March 1931, LeCoultre filed a patent for a watch containing about 30 parts which was able to glide off its frame and turn around entirely using grooves, pins, and a locking mechanism. This therefore enabled the central part of the case to rotate 180 degrees. Thereafter, they registered the name “Reverso”.
Soon after, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso became popular outside the world of polo and sports. Rather than wearers considering the solid metal case back as a protective shield, they saw the surface as a blank canvas and a slot to include a unique personality to their watches through customization, self-expression, and personal dedication.
